What type of Window Treatments Are the Most Privacy Friendly?

April 30, 2018

Your house is your castle, and if you’re like most homeowners, finding window treatments in Hartford that give you privacy and noise control to maintain your sanctuary is important to you. Any window covering is preferable to an uncovered window. However there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, particularly on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Windows That Are Hard to Cover

Most large, square windows in your house are simple to cover with almost any window treatment like Hartford shutters, drapes, or blinds|.

But there might be some situations when you need a particular type of window treatment to provide adequate privacy and light control. These might be:

  • Bathroom windows where water and humidity can cause problems for fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are tall and thin where window treatments can be knocked around when you use the door.

  • Non-square windows like eyebrows, circular windows, bow windows, etc., where conventional store-bought blinds and drapes can’t cover your window without covering up the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be impossible to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you need window treatments that go the extra mile to provide privacy to your house.

As a plus, shop around for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Window Treatments That Give You The Most Privacy

The window treatments we recommend most for privacy are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is your goal. If you want to let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For high windows, you should keep the louvers tilted at an angle to let light in while still maintaining privacy.

Plantation shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re a natural fit for bathrooms.

Another privacy-friendly window treatment is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space at the top of the window, but are easily pulled down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be cut to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in water resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Help With Privacy

While any window covering offers a basic level of privacy, there are a few that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add an airy feeling to a room. However they’re fairly translucent and can be seen through fairly easily, especially at night.

Another product we don’t recommend for privacy are aluminum or heavy blinds, which can bend and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t close the blinds all the way because of breakage, then they’re not providing much privacy at all.
